Top film acting schools in Nigeria

The Nollywood industry is vast and there are so many things to learn. Where do you start? Whom can you talk to? Finding a film school can be tough. The shugaban team has compiled a list of film schools that have produced top-notch actors, filmmakers and more.

This film schools were selected based on the popularity of movies they have released.

  • Pencil Film and Television Institute (PEFTI)

Located in Ajao Estate, Isolo, Lagos, PEFTI was founded by TV drama series producer Wale Adenuga.

In 2004, Adenuga opened the Pencil Film and Television Institute (PEFTI). Its courses include Producing, Directing, and Cinematography. The school was recently featured in De Film Industries van Nigeria, a Danish documentary on the Nigerian film industry.

The school offers diplomas and short courses in music, acting, scriptwriting, production, and editing.

The talents from PEFTI get to practice their skills at Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP). WAP is the company behind house-hold franchises like Papa Ajasco, Akpan and Oduma, Super Story, and Binta and Friends.

  • Mainframe Film and Media Institute (MFMI)

Veteran Nigerian Filmmaker, Tunde Kelani, a.k.a TK launched the Mainframe Film and Media Institute (MFMI) on his 68th birthday at Goethe-Institut Nigeria.

The courses offered include Digital Photography and Cinematography, Post Production and Digital Imaging, Acting, and The Art of Directing.

Ha has over 30 years of experience producing movies like Saworoide, Maami, Ti Oluwa Ni Ile, The Campus Queen. He will draw from these experiences to teach his students how to make movies that transcend generations. He will also teach them the business side of film making.


  • Yul Edochie Academy.

A Subsidiary of Yul Edochie Art world is an academy for Acting, Training and Grooming talents to be actors and actresses who can stand their ground anywhere in the world.

The academy was Established in 2015 by the budding actor Yul Edochie.

It is located at Dkk Plaza, KM 46 Lekki-Epe Express, Farms Bustop Beside Splash Bar, Ajah, Lagos Nigeria

  • Del-York Creative Academy DCA

DCA works in partnership with the New York Film Academy which was established by Linus Idahosa.

Depending on the term time, the campus moves camp from Lagos to Abuja.

Led by instructors from Hollywood, the creative academy offers courses in digital film making, directing, acting for film, producing, screenwriting, editing, broadcast journalism, 3D animation, cinematography, digital photography, graphics & special effects, music video production, set design, costume design, and makeup.

Alumni from academy include: filmmaker James Omoke, music video director Adasa Cookeygam, Nollywood actress Tamara Eteimo, and hip-hop group Show Dem Camp.

  • Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts (LAPA)

Founded by Joke Silva and Olu Jacobs, the performing arts institute provides practical training of international quality in Lagos.

LAPA has made available diploma and certificate programs in acting, directing, scriptwriting, critique, cinematography, set design, makeup, costume design and dance for stage, radio presentation.

Notable alumni of the academy include Abiodun Kassim, Omoye ‘Brownie’ Uzamere, Ayobami Ajike, and Orji Ibe

  • Royal Arts Academy

In June 2010, Emem Isong established a training school for actors and filmmakers. It was established by Isong to build the creative skills of upcoming art enthusiasts.

Upon establishment, RAA has trained over 200 students. quite a number of them are actively engaged in the entertainment industry, while others have moved on to do other businesses.

The academy has produced actors like Etinosa Idemudia and so many others

The academy situated in the heart of Gwarimpa in Abuja offers short term, long term and weekend courses. The academy offers a wide range of programs in different areas of filmmaking ranging from scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, directing, etc.

Mount Zion Film Academy a subsidiary of The Mount Zion Faith Ministeries Int’l Nigeria.

The main objective of the academy os to teach technical Art and spiritual principles of Christian film production, also presenting the simplicity of making movies for kingdom expansion.

The sons of Evangelist Mike Bamiloye, Damilola Mike-Bamilloye and Joshua Mike-Bamiloye are the brains behind the film academy as they will also be facilitating.
