Nigerian Musicians Who Broke Into Nollywood.

It’s no news that a lot of Nigerian music stars have proven to be multi-talented. Musician or Actor? why choose one when you can dominate both scenes? Heres a list of musicians who are on both scenes.

Folarin “Falz” Falana

 born October 27, 1990, better known by his stage name Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter and actor. He began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called “The School Boys” with his friend before his professional career as a music artist began in 2009. Falz became more well-known after his song “Marry Me” featuring vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade. 

falz began his acting skill with his role “SEGE” on Funke Akindele’s Jenifa’s diary and has since featured in several other movies like Merry men, Chief daddy, New Money amongst others. On September 1, 2018, Falz won “Best Supporting Actor” at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for his role as Quam in Tope Oshin Ogun’s movie New Money, becoming the first Nigerian musician to have won the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards twice.

Bankole “Banky W” Wellington

born 27 March 1981, popularly known by his stage name Banky W  is a Nigerian singer, rapper, actor, and politician.  He started his record label E.M.E in 2002 while studying. He also used to work at GlobalSpec and would sing really loud with his headphones on. In 2009, he left the US for Nigeria and established his record label in Lagos where he signed artists like Niyola, Shaydee, Skales, and Wizkid to the label at the time.

Banky started out with a movie career with his role as “Dozie Onwuka” in the wedding party, he also featured in the wedding party 2, Up North and Sugar Rush.

Chidinma Ekile

 born 2 May 1991, popularly known by her stage name Chidinma, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. In 2010, she rose to stardom after winning the third season of Project Fame West Africa. Following the release of the music video for her “Emi Ni Baller” single, she became the first female musician to peak at number 1 on the MTV Base Official Naija Top 10 chart.

She broke into Nollywood with a role in Kunle Afolayan’s The Bridge as Stella, A young lady who faces woes as she elopes with her Yoruba Prince, against the wishes of each of their tribalistic families. Given that this was her first shot in a movie, we hope to see more of her in the nearest future.

Ikechukwu “Ikechukwu” Onunaku

also known as Killz born Manassas, Virginia; raised in Lagos, Nigeria, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and actor.  He moved to the United States after completing high school at kings college Lagos and returned over a decade later to Nigeria shortly before the release of his first album son of the soil in 2006. He went on to release two other albums. His first and one of his iconic hits “My Name is Ikechukwu” was released in 2006.

 the single was a smash hit. This was followed by his sophomore album “Life and Times of Killz vol.1” and an even bigger ”Wind Am Well” ft Dbanj and Don Jazzy broke records in large proportions thereby cementing it as an all-time classic.  Ikechukwu delved into Nollywood in his first movie Gbomo Gbomo Express where he played the role of a musician who was dropped by his record label, which didn’t really launch his acting skills until he stared in The Wedding Party, The Wedding Party2 and Your Excellency The Movie.

Efa Iwara 

Efa is a rapper, Hip-Hop enthusiast and actor. born in the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo State, he discovered he had a passion for rap at a rather young age and went on to write his first verse by the time he turned nine. After high school, he gained admission into the University of Ibadan to study Geography. While at UI, he, along with 3 friends, including DJ Klem formed a group called X-Factor. 

Efa has featured in both movies and television series like Put a ring on it, MTV Shuga, TMC(The Men’s Club) to mention just a few.

Ayoola Ayolola

Born on the 12th of January, he was brought up in Kano but found his way to Lagos for the purpose of building his career. Ayoola Ayolola got his first degree from Covenant University, Ogun State, Nigeria. Ayoola won MTN project fame 5th Edition in 2012.

Ayoola stole the hearts of many ladies with the exceptional delivery of his character as ‘ Mide’ who is a loving and romantic boyfriend in popular web series, ‘Skinny Girls In Transit’. Ayoola has also featured in several other movies and web series like Everything In Between, Isoken, If I Am President, The Men’s Club and many more. Asides screen acting, Ayoola is also actively involved in stage drama like  Quen Moremi and several others.

Remilekun Abdulkalid Safaru, known by his stage names Reminisce and ALAGA IBILE, is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter from Ogun State. He performs in both English and his native language, Yoruba. He recorded his first song in a studio in 2006 and recorded a hardcore rap album at Coded Tunes, but the album was never released and he decided to focus on his studies and complete schooling.

In 2008 Reminisce returned to the music scene, performing a rap verse on a track titled “Bachelor’s Life” off 9ice’s sophomore album titled “Gongo Aso”. His first single, “Ever since”, featured 9ice, and was a story about his life till that moment. His second, “If Only”, was a love song produced by Dtunez, where he showed his versatility as a .singer and a rapper. Both songs established Reminisce in the Nigerian music scene. Reminisce made a groundbreaking entrance into Nollywood with his role “Makanaki” in Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys.

Born Olanrewaju Ogunmefun, on 7 August 1984. better known by his stage name Vector, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and philosopher. He has released three studio albums, including State of Surprise and The Second Coming (2012). In anticipation of his second studio album, he released a mixtape titled Bar Racks. “Lafiaji” which was released in December 2016.

He also released a mixtape in October 2018, “The Rap Dialogue” in an effort to keep the spirit of Nigerian hip-hop alive He is the voice behind a Sprite commercial that aired on radio stations across Nigeria since 2009. His first featured movie was June The movie, followed by his next movie Lara and the beat. Vector is sure going to be a familiar face in movies.

Seyi Shay

Born Oluwaseyi Odedere; 21 December 1985, professionally known as Seyi Shay (pronounced Shay-yee Shay), is a Nigerian-based singer, songwriter, and actress. She wrote and produced three songs for the soundtrack to Konami’s video game Crime Life: Gang Wars (2005)

 In 2008, she became the lead singer for the now-defunct pop girl group From Above. The group signed a recording deal with Sony’s Columbia Records and was managed by Mathew Knowles’ Music World Entertainment company. In November 2013, Shay signed an endorsement deal with telecommunications service provider Etisalat. Seyi has broken into the Nollywood scene with a stellar performance in the movie Lara and the Beat.

 is a Nigerian rapper/ hip-hop recording artist, stage performer, businessman, and owner of the talent managing outfit known as ‘The Goretti Company’, company responsible for launching the careers of Chidinma and Phyno, among others. Also popularly known as Oga Boss, he has received many nominations and won awards, the most notable being the award for Best Hip-hop Video for the hit “U Go Wound O!!” at the 2008 maiden edition of the Soundcity Music Video Awards.

This award was presented to him by the American hip-hop star Nas. In 2019, he made a debut in acting by starring in the movie
King of Boys as Odogwu, His debut album, Dat Ibo Boy, which dropped in 2009, contained, “Aiye Po Gan! (Enuf Space)”. He made a grand entrance into Nollywood with his performance in Kemi Adetiba’s King of Boys.
