Celebrities in Politics: Nollywood Stars who have delved into Politics

In a society where indulging into politics takes a lot of guts, we find a lot of people shying away from it. Knowing that politics is a hard ball to play,  people have resorted into involving themselves in politics only on social media and from their bedrooms, while some people have taken the bold steps in involving themselves with actual politics. Here are some celebrities who have contributed/are contributing their quota to the growth of our great nation politically.

Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD)

After having contributed immensely to the growth of Nollywood, something he is still very involved in, RMD is one of the celebrities that took politics as serious as his acting career. Seeing how much passion and hard work he effortlessly puts into his career, politics was just another aspect of his life that could have a direct impact on the value system of Nigeria. RMD was appointed as the Special Adviser of Culture and Tourism to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan in 2008, then became the commissioner for the Culture and Tourism of Delta Statefrom 2009 to 2015.

Hilda Dokubo

A veteran Nollywood actress renowned for her impeccable performance of intense emotional characters. Hilda Dokubo took some time away from the industry to serve in politics. She wasbthe Special Adviser on Yoith Affairs to the former Governor of Rivers state, Peter Odili. between

Mercy Johnson- Okojie

A phenomenal actress, wife, and mother of three, Mercy Johnson Okojie. Mercy became part of the political class in 2017 when she was appointed as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello on entertainment, arts and culture. Mercy embodies that saying that ” one can do anything as long as they are willing to put in the work”. She is one of the actresses that did not study Theatre Arts in school, but is right up there rubbing shoulders with people who has classical training.

Okey Bakassi

Okechukwu Anthony Oyegbule popularly known as Okey Bakassi, a comedian and Nollywood actor. He also answered the call to serve his people, as he joined the governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim as a Senior Special Assistant. At that time, he obviously dropped everything that had to do with entertainment and he put in his best, the very best of himself to make it worth it. However, the re-election bid was not successful although that is not to say that is the end of political ambitions for the multi-talented entertainer.

Yul Edochie

Actor, Filmmaker and son to internationally recognized veteran actor ,Pete Edochie. In 2017, Yul Edochie surprised everyone when he announced that he had joined the Anambra State Gubernatorial race. He took to his Instagram to state that Nigerians need a brand of leaders who will put the masses first because the older ones have failed for too long, hammering that they have come to their last bus stop. You could call Yul some sort of activist as he often takes to his social media pages to call out the government on its political and governance errors….and he does it without mincing words.

Kate Henshaw

Kate Henshaw is another talented veteran Nollywood actor that had a surprising romance with politics. In 2014, she contested to represent Calabar South Federal Constituency under the plarform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which she lost. Months after the unsuccessful run for the ticket to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives, she was appointed as a Special Adviser to the Cross River State governor, Ben Ayade. She is now the Special Adviser-Liaison, Lagos.

Desmond Elliot

Desmond Elliot is also one of the actors that joined politics in 2014. He joined the All Progressives Congress and ran for a seat after one year, in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Not so many people believed that Desmond Elliot could pull that off, as a lot of people were expecting him to probably fail as it was his first time around. However, he won and was sworn in as a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Surulere 01 constituency.

Femi Adebayo

Femi Adebayo is one of the most talented and popular Yoruba actors. He was made the Special Adviser to the Governor of Kwara State where he hails from, Abdul Ahmed, on Arts Culture and Tourism. He took to his Instagram page after then to express how grateful he is for the opportunity.

It is not just about the political post that matters, but their motive to impact lives through their actions and decisions is simply encouraging.
